A fresh and easy salsa made with mangoes, tomatoes, red onions, jalapeño, cilantro, and a touch of Indian spices lends an exotic touch to your summer snacking needs.
What is your favorite summer fruit? If you answered “mango”, then you and I can be best friends. Mango is the king of fruits, that golden orb of deliciousness equally coveted by both purists and those who like to experiment with foods. Mango lends itself well to a variety of dishes, both sweet and savory. In fact, in the Indian subcontinent, the mango is enjoyed at different stages of maturity. Baby green mangoes are pickled and preserved in spices, mature but unripe mangoes are added to curries, and of course, the ripe mangoes are enjoyed as such or made into any number of desserts and beverages.
Recently, I shared a collection of my mango recipes on Instagram, and took a poll to see what other mango recipes my followers would like to see. I got a ton of interesting suggestions, but one suggestion stood out because it’s a personal favorite, but one that I have never thought to share on the blog.
A fresh mango salsa is the perfect summer side dish. It is so easy to make and bursts with flavor in each bite. Just take a spoon to it, scoop it up with tortilla chips or pita breads, or simple add it to tacos, rice bowls, and salads.
In this fresh summer salsa, I have used ripe mangoes, plump tomatoes, crunchy red onions, spicy jalapeño peppers, fresh cilantro, and lime. And to add a unique Indian twist to it, I seasoned it with Himalayan pink salt and chat masala. Chat masala is a dry spice blend of cumin, ginger, aamchoor (dried mango powder), black pepper and chilies. It can be sprinkled on anything (roasted vegetables, slices of fruit, eggs or salads) to add a little bit of oomph to your dish. You can grab a packet of chat masala from your local Indian grocery store; I can assure that you will be hooked!
I made and shot this much-loved mango salsa recipe for the lovely people at Gitadini who make amazing kitchen-ware like this stylish masala dabba (spice box).
