A refreshing beverage made with fresh cherry-lemon syrup and topped with sparkling water is perfect for the warm days. Sip on it on a lazy evening, serve it at parties or your late summer barbecue cookout!
I love Labor Day weekend. It is a welcome pause after a hectic first week of school. This weekend is doubly busy this year because we also celebrate our traditional festival of Onam on Labor Day. Usually, it falls on a working day here, but I am glad that we have the day off to celebrate together. I talked about Onam in my previous post here if you want to take a look.
Today’s post though is all about this beautiful beverage that I made a couple of weeks back. I wanted to share it with you before summer officially ends.
We begin with a punnet of fresh red cherries. Juicy and sweet, they are perfect to be made into a fresh cherry syrup. We will also squeeze some lemon juice for a tangy kick.
Is there anything better than a jar of fresh fruit syrup? The possibilities are endless – use it in beverages, drizzle on pancakes, use it to soak cakes, and so on.
One of my favorite ways to make interesting summer thirst quenchers is to make fruity lemonades. Freshly squeezed lemon juice sweetened with seasonal fruit syrup makes for some pretty and delicious drinks.
Here are a few other lemonade recipes from the blog archives –
- rose lemonade
- nectarine ginger lemonade
- mango mint lemonade
- strawberry lemonade
- blueberry limeade
- basil seeds lemonade
This cherry lemon spritzer also mimics a fruity lemonade with the sweetness from cherries and sharpness from lemon juice.
I call this recipe a spritzer because I topped my cherry lemonade with fizzy water. It can either be sparkling water or club soda as per your preference. You can also use cold water or even a splash of liquor if you are feeling especially festive!
Add a sprig of fresh mint and serve immediately. This pretty pink-red beverage will be perfect for your Labor Day barbecue cookout, don’t you think?
Here’s how to make this fizzy cherry lemon spritzer.
- Fresh red cherries - 2 cups, pitted and halved
- Sugar - ¾ cup
- Water - 1 cup
- Lemons - 2, juiced
- Club soda or sparkling water - as needed
- Ice cubes - to serve
- Fresh mint leaves - to garnish
- Take cherries, sugar and water in a saucepan. Cook over medium-high heat till cherries soften and can be mashed with a spoon. Keep cooking on low heat till syrup is lightly thickened. Stir in lemon juice. Strain into a clean glass jar and refrigerate till needed.
- To make a drink, fill a glass ⅓rd of the way with cherry-lemon syrup. Top with cold club soda or sparkling water. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and serve chilled.
Isn’t that a gorgeous drink to sip on? Do try this recipe!
