Glass jar terrariums are all the rage nowadays. Every home decor and DIY magazine/blog features it around spring time. They are easy to DIY, gorgeous and come in all shapes and sizes.
I lost most of my plants last winter. We just have a small patio garden, I didn’t exactly have a truck load of plants to begin with. To celebrate the return of good times (aka spring), we visited the Wildseed Farms here in Texas. It was so pretty.
Anyway, I got some plants from their nursery, but forgot to get succulents. Last year I had a beautiful trio of succulents in painted terracotta pots. Some happy hours spent browsing on Pinterest made me want to try growing them in pretty glass jars. I also had to come up with an idea to style our living room for this month’s Photography Styling Challenge. So, a display of small terrariums it is!
I couldn’t believe how simple a terrarium is. It is just a fancy word for growing plants in a glass jar or vase. I collected my jars, succulents, dirt and rocks and got to work. The DT has some beautiful, small glass jars this time.
You basically arrange the plants in the dirt as you like and that’s it! Wide mouthed jars work well. Mix different varieties of succulents in the same jar to add interest. Make sure to select at least one short and one tall variety each.
You will need:
- Glass jars
- Small rocks
- Dirt and/or sand
- Succulents
How to:
- Start with a clean and dry glass jar. Layer the bottom with rocks for drainage. Add dirt or sand on top. Plant the succulents. Press them firmly in the dirt and add more rocks. That’s it!
Notes:
- Use a spray bottle to moisten the soil when needed.
- Don’t forget to place them in direct or indirect sunlight every now and then. Some terrariums do have a mold issue over time.
- Use as many succulents as the jar will hold. A really big jar will look good with an odd number of plants. Make sure they are of varying heights, shapes and colors.
- If you have a really big jar, you an also add little toy animals to create a complete garden scene.
What do you think of the trend? Have you made any terrariums? Do you love succulents like I do?

I am so going to do this, Anjana! I have a few glass jars lying around and have been looking for ways to use them! Need to find some succulents- I assume I should find these at any nursery?
Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy & Harried says
Great! You will find the plants at any nursery or home improvement store like Lowe’s. Good luck!!

That’s great! Thank you for such a wonderful idea. 🙂

Anjana! I went looking for succulents and found some but was very confused. Could you suggest a few names or tell me the ones you’ve used here and I can get exactly those? 😀
Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy & Harried says
Oh Aditi, I’d be happy to. Succulents are plants with thick, fleshy leaves. They usually don’t have thorns like cacti.
The short one in my jar is Pachyveria or Little Jewel, the color can vary from a bluish shade to green to purplish depending on the amount of sunlight.
The long succulent I used is a dwarf variety of Jade plant. I also saw pretty varieties of Aloe Vera at Lowe’s. They’d look good too.
Good luck dear!!

That’s so helpful, Anjana! Will start with the ones you’ve mentioned and then hopefully will be able to research and understand them better. 🙂

Looks good! I started a glass terrarium once, and I watered it a bit too much. Soon mosses started growing and spoiled the look. Succulents are the best as they need less water!

Yep, I need to watch out for mold… fingers crossed!
