It took a long time for me to come up with this blog title. Do I call it a wreath, a wall hanging or a Christmas frame? You get the idea, don’t you?
I simply removed the print and glass from a framed artwork and transformed it into a little Christmas display. It can be used as a wreath, a wall hanging or just resting on a tabletop in a cute Christmas vignette.
This is such a simple craft, and so easy to customize to suit your decor. And as you can see, I finally got to use the J-O-Y letters!
You will need:
- A large frame with the artwork and glass removed
- Twine or ribbon
- Christmas baubles/ornaments and hooks
- Wooden letters to spell JOY (or NOEL, MERRY, etc)
As you can see, I gathered a lot of things, but ended up using only the letters and a few baubles.
How to:
- Remove the art and glass from the frame.
- Tie twine or thin ribbon in a zigzag manner. The frame I used had these little staple-like thingies all around the edges. I could easily loop the twine through them and tie it tightly.
- Play around with the placement of the ornaments. Hang baubles or ornament balls using little ornament hooks. I fixed the letters using tape, or you can use a glue gun. Oh, I did paint the letters a dark brown using acrylic paint before using them.
Hang it on the wall or place it on a table for a cute little display.
It adds just the right touch of cheer to our Christmas decor. What do you think?
Do let me know in the comments if you have more ideas on how to personalize such a picture frame.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this lovely idea! Perfect timing for me because I just hosted my daughter’s baby shower and was looking for something unique to decorate the space above where we gathered her gifts. My daughter isn’t the usual “pink or blue baby shower” type, so my son took your idea and created a unique work of art just for her! In place of the wooden letters for JOY, we went to Hobby Lobby and found black and white alphabet postcards to spell BABY. They have an industrial look and we hung them with mini clothes pins that were studded with tiny clear crystals. We then hung baby socks, a few ornaments, and a picture of my daughter as a baby on the burlap cord (which we had left over from her wedding.) She LOVED IT and said, “It’s so me!” Now we have it hanging in our guest room for when she, her husband, and baby (due in April) visit. Thank you and may you be blessed for your generosity ❤
