Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
That is my mom’s favorite hymn and one of mine too. It is so apt for this season of Thanksgiving. It is a wonderful American tradition that I am happy to adopt. We must be ever thankful for everything in life, but it helps to have a specific day to reflect on all the lovely things in life with gratitude.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I made a little Thanksgiving tree. This was a super simple craft. I used the feathers left over from Boy’s paper turkey project as the leaves for the tree.
You will need:
- A large vase
- A few twigs or dried branches
- Moss or stones or some kind of vase filler (optional)
- Craft paper in different colors
- Marker
- Yarn or ribbon
- Needle or paper punch, and scissors
How to:
- Arrange the twigs in the vase. Use as many branches as you want. If you want to, fill the bottom with some kind of interesting filler. I used a handful of dry moss.
- Cut out as many leaves as you want from craft paper. I used the usual fall suspects like yellow, orange and brown leaves, and a couple of pink and blue ones too. Fold each one in half length-wise, for added dimension.
- Mark the outline of each leaf using black marker and write what you are thankful for on them.
- Thread a single stand of yarn or thread at the base of each leaf. Or if the leaves are big enough, punch a hole and thread ribbon through it.
- Hang on the branches as desired and admire your handiwork!
We are, of course, thankful for family and friends, food and shelter and good health, and also for those very practical Boy-ish things such as cars, colors and such.
Are you making a Thanksgiving Tree this year? What are you thankful for? Do share.
If you are wondering about the brown pumpkin, you will not believe what it is made of. Go here to take a look.
This is not the first time I’ve made a twig tree. I made a similar one for Easter.
