I have been seeing painted rugs all over blog land for quite some time now. I wasn’t exactly sure how to go about it, but decided to give it a try. I decided to test it out on a small rug/doormat I already had.
Here is the original ‘greige’ (grayish beige) rug.
There are many ways you can paint a rug. You can tape a design, either straight lines or some pattern, and paint over it. Using spray paint would be faster, I guess. But there are many tutorials out there, that recommend using a paint roller for the best results. Or you can try stamping or even stenciling a simple design. To me, that seemed the easiest, non-committal way to go.
I chose this round plastic thingy (that came as some sort of shipping material) as my stencil. I used a small craft brush dipped in mint green paint to create the dots.
Now the smart thing would be to seal it with a clear fabric protector spray once the paint dried.
Till then, it can survive in a low-traffic area.
It is such a fun, easy update. Have you painted a rug yet?!!

Thanks for the feature, Susan!
This is amazing! What a creative way of using “trash!” Ive got similar, if not the same, rugs at both doors and will be looking for something to recreate this with!
Thanks Corinna! It is such an easy way to update a boring doormat. Be creative with the stencil/stamp.
I had to click on this b/c I have been reading a lot about painting/stenciling/stamping on fabric. I would have never thought to try a rug! Rugs are so expensive, so this would be a great way to make a cheap rug look fabulous! This week on my blog I shared how I was looking for interesting things around the house to stamp on fabric. That little thingamajig you found is very nifty! 🙂 I’m a new follower on bloglovin’!

Very neat work. I’m sure it would’nt have been easy to paint thru those teeny tiny holes. But you’ve done a fab job.
Thank you, Namrata! It was just very repetitive work. Place, dip, paint and so on…
So cute!
Thanks Amy!
