I love apples. They are my favorite fruit hands down. I like them as a simple fruit snack or with a little pat of peanut butter (You’ve never tried it, you say? Well you should!). Sometimes I make a simple apple crumble (or crisp, as it is known in some places) which is usually a fall treat, but I am not one to follow such rules. If I feel like it, I have it any time of the year!
A crumble is so much easier than a regular cake or pie, but equally delicious. Serve it with something creamy like a huge scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh whipped cream, pudding or custard for a delicious treat.
You will need:
- Red apples – 4-5 medium-sized, peeled and thinly sliced
- All purpose flour – 1 cup
- Brown sugar – 1 cup + 2 tbsp
- Butter – 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp
- Salt – a pinch
- Lemon juice – 1 tsp
How to:
- Place a tablespoon of butter in an 8 or 9 inch foil-lined baking pan. Place it in the oven and turn on heat to 350 deg.F. The butter should be melted by the time you prep the other ingredients.
- Mix the flour, salt and brown sugar together.
- Mix in half a cup of cold butter with the dry ingredients to resemble a crumbly mixture. Feel free to use your fingers for best results! Or use a fork or pastry cutter.
- Arrange the apple slices densely in the bottom of the butter-coated pan. Sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar and a teaspoon of lemon juice over them.
- Pour the crumble mixture evenly on top. Slice a tablespoon of butter and place little pats of butter on top of the mixture.
- Bake at 350 deg.F for 30 minutes or till the top is golden brown.
- Serve warm with ice cream or pudding.
I served it with some ready-made butterscotch pudding for an easy, sweet treat!
Yummy, crunchy, buttery, sweet goodness in a bowl!
Variations:
- For a low-calorie version, use 2 tbsp butter and 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp of oil, and omit the melted butter on the bottom of the pan and the pats of butter on top of the crumble. I have tried this myself, and the crumble comes out just as crisp and yummy. The small amount of butter gives a hint of the buttery flavor, but with reduced calories.
- Try this recipe with peaches or nectarines instead of apples. If you like their tartness, use green apples instead of red.

I’m not a huge fan of cooked apples, but my husband LOVES apple pie. I;ll have to make this for him this fall! Now, that strawberry cake I can definitely get on-board with 🙂
