Last month, I took part in the {Ditto} DIY monthly design challenge issued by Fieldstone Hill Design. The aim of the challenge is to find simple, bite-sized ways to add fine design elements into our own homes – a month at a time!
July’s challenge is to “Frame some fabric”. Here is the inspiration picture – a framed pair of Ikat fabric art from Neiman Marcus.
The Inspiration Picture
Can you believe this retails for more than $500 a piece?
Finding artwork that you truly love is a daunting job, and very expensive too. I have artwork on my walls that I don’t really love. The solution is to create your own art, like my attempt here. If you are really talented, feel free to paint an elaborate piece of art. Or create a gallery wall with collected items. Or make wreaths. Framing fabric is another excellent way to create art and add color to your decor.
The fabric can be any cute fabric you like or a family heirloom, like something grandma or great-grandma made. Either way, you end up with an artwork uniquely yours.
I thought a lot about how I could include framed fabric in our decor. I did not want to simply buy a random piece of fabric and frame it. Though I think something like this would have worked.
But there was something about it that was not working for me. Meanwhile, I decided to revive a long-lost love of hand embroidery. I was pretty good at it once upon a time, but haven’t done it in years. I chose a simple hand drawn design and got to work on a new cream handkerchief.
When I was painting my ‘bubbles’ artwork, I tested the color on an old 4×6 frame. And suddenly, it all came together! I framed my little embroidered fabric in the pink frame. And voila! Instant cheer!!
So, here is my take on the {Ditto} DIY Framed Fabric Art challenge – on a much, much smaller (but sweeter) scale!
For the vignette, I used books for height and a wooden truck that Boy picked up from Michael’s and painted. I also have a vase of roses and leaves from my little garden. That, people, is my kind of DIY. Simple, spontaneous and fun!
This would make a sweet gift for someone special.
I created another little embroidery art with a floral design.
I plan to do a couple more, whenever I have free time, and frame them up in mismatched little frames.
So what do you think? Do you like it?

That is pretty neat. I used embroider too back in the day. Maybe one of these days I’ll get back to doing it.
