It is hard to get really good artwork that you truly love. Unless you are willing to spend a large amount on them. We all have those ordinary, mass-produced framed prints, right? I do too. I have an exceptionally ugly one I got from a thrift store. I bought it only because I liked the size of the frame. Here it is – all boring and generic and just…ugh!
I always thought I could use the frame for a large photograph or something. Until I got my free Valspar paint samples, and had a different idea. I wanted to create my own artwork. And this is how I did it.
Now, I am no artist, so I knew I couldn’t free hand any elaborate pictures or designs. So I decided to stay safe and stamp a design of some sort. I had pinned this inspiration picture. Click on the picture to be taken to the original source.
Here is the step-by-step on how I updated my artwork.
- First, I removed the print from the frame. I may or may not have cut myself while doing this!
- I gathered my paint supplies next. I had all these colors to choose from. The samples are the light blush and coral colors – Apricot Ice and Sonora Rose, respectively. (You can use craft paint too. I just wanted to try out these new colors.)
- I used the light blush color for the base. It needed 5 coats to cover the printed area fully.
- I set it aside to dry completely. Meanwhile I gathered my stamping supplies – bottle caps and jar lids in different sizes!
- Once the base coat was dry, I started stamping the design. I used Sonora Rose for the design. (While stamping, you can follow a pattern if you want to, or do it randomly till you are satisfied. Use more than one color if you wish. Just let your imagination run!)
- I alternated bright and faint stamp patterns for interest. You could fill in some of the design with paint or just let it be. Little Boy didn’t want me to fill in the color. He said these looked like bubbles! So I just let it be.
- Finally, I let the paint dry completely, put it back in the frame, and hung it up! My very own artwork!!
It is so hard to photograph a frame with glass in front. I think it needs a darker frame. Maybe my next project!
I am feeling pretty confident and am thinking of doing something on canvas board now.
Here is the before and after side by side, for comparison.
This is such an easy DIY to personalize your space. Even kids could help. A framed artwork by kids is in fact, an excellent idea!
Here is another cute pin-spired wall hanging.
Kids’ doodles and paintings make good artwork. Frame them up or display them some other way.

Since frames are so expensive, it makes sense to repurpose old ones.
