I have lived in San Antonio for 3+ years now, and never visited the botanical garden. The Zoo and Sea World, we’ve visited countless times. So last weekend, I gathered my forces (read hubby and son) and spent a pleasant day exploring the San Antonio Botanical Garden. It was lovely!
It may not be the best botanical garden in the country, but it is a good place to explore plants and flowers with little ones. It is neat and well maintained. Meanwhile, I dream of visiting the top 10 botanical gardens in the US as per Trip Advisor and the top 12 across the world according to CNN Travel.
At the San Antonio botanical garden, there are well-manicured gardens with blooming perennials, roses and other plants. There is the Lucile Halsell conservatory, housing tropical and desert plants. There is a charming Texas Native Trail flanked with wild Texan native trees and shrubs, and even a sensory garden for the blind with touchable sculptures and tinkling little waterfalls.
Here are a few shots from our trip. Lots of prettiness all around.
I was really excited to see the pomegranate blossoms and tiny fruit.
These are a type of palm fruit.
Lots of native cacti.
Some of them had really pretty blooms too. Such vibrant colors. Prettiness in an otherwise arid landscape!
Look at those bees having a good time!
We took the Texas Native Trail next. Lots of wild flowers along the trail.
Enjoying some ‘me’ time at the water’s edge.
Hello hello… look who’s here! Say quack!!
There were life-size replicas of early American settlement homes. I was inexplicably drawn to this window. How simple life must have been back then!
Back at the main garden, there was an area with small model houses, that showed how to recreate different garden types like cottage, hill country, Spanish casa and the typical Americana home. How darling is this replica of a little cottage! I badly want the little plant stand and watering can.
A Spanish casa. Love the coral and blue.
We couldn’t explore the Japanese garden since it was being renovated. Also, we didn’t find any birds in the bird look-out. They must have been up in the shade hiding from the hot Texan sun!
And finally, here is a shot of our adorable little tour guide, map in hand, wondering which way to go next!!!
All in all, a day well spent! If you have a chance to visit San Antonio, do spend some time at the garden.
How calming is nature, the ultimate decorator!!
